Between its subzero surface temperatures, shearing winds and frequent whiteouts, the environment should be considered extremely hostile even to properly outfitted individuals; mechanical equipment and communications technology are prone to freeze and malfunction as well, making any minor setback potentially lethal. During the war between Republic and Empire, the Hoth system was the site of a major fleet battle. This resulted in a large number of starships falling into Hoth’s gravity well and crashing on the planet surface. These derelict ships have become the base of operations for a large group of pirates, as well as a center of dispute between Republic and Imperial forces."

Hoth is located in the Outer Rim Territories, the sixth planet of a star system bearing the same name. The native sentient species, known as Arkolans, have adapted to the icy surface, while some groups have also been able to exploit the molten core of the planet for mining purposes. One little-known group on the planet, sometimes called the Helstorm Brotherhood, are a revivalist group who maintain an ice fortress on the planet surface.[1] Following a battle above the planet during the Great Galactic War, Hoth's surface became the final resting place of numerous starships belonging to both the Republic and Imperial fleets.
History[]
Hoth was perceived to be of little significance by both the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire until the conflict known as the Great Galactic War. The site of a particularly fierce battle, advanced starships from both fleets clashed above the frigid planet; many powerful war machines were destroyed and plummeted to Hoth's surface.
These starships were forgotten by all but mercenaries and pirates until the signing of the Treaty of Coruscant. Both the Republic and the Empire turned their attention back to Hoth, intent on reclaiming the wreckage of the ships they lost during the battle over the planet. This has resulted in increasing conflict as both sides come into contact with each other, as well as those that moved to salvage the fallen starships in their absence.
